My paintings are a reflection of what it means to be a young man in contemporary Australia. It is a large and complex topic. I have focused on a few sub-issues: such as, the search for self-identity, online gaming culture and the threat of war. The paintings are in watercolour, acrylic, ink and pencil. They incorporate collage. I was inspired by a range of artists (especially painters with an interest in colour) as well as everyday culture like video games and fashion.
My paintings are essentially figurative, but I have incorporated abstract elements, text and references to other artists. For instance, in my painting “Blamo Macho” there are references to Roy Lichtenstein and Greyson Perry’s work as well as the Telly Tubbies and Popeye. I have enjoyed researching and making these works. I hope I have conveyed something of this sense of enjoyment and exploration to you as a viewer.
