Sienna Curby
Bachelor of Visual Art
Through carefully focusing on small sections of archival photographs, my paintings contemplate the intimacy of our interactions with other people. When paying close attention, communication and expression can be read through the subtlety of gestures. The nuanced movement of arms and hands holds a depth of information that is slowly released as I paint. Narratives and emotions begin to emerge and resonate beyond the canvas.
Although tied to my personal history, the figures and scenes depicted are intentionally unspecific and are therefore open to interpretation and imagined stories. Suggestions of human connection and absence within my work create a tension between feelings of closeness and isolation that separate our experiences from our memories.
